Events for May 2009
Saturday May 9, 11AM @ 2640 : DIY FEST 2009!
It's the 3rd annual Baltimore DIY Fest - a day packed with skillshares of all sorts, plus tons of great tablers with crafts, zines, books, and more!
Wednesday May 20, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Swift Winds: Ron Sakolsky Reads at Red Emma's
Join us for a reading and a book release celebration for the latest work by anarcho-surrealist author Ron Sakolsky! A prolific writer, Sakolsky is the editor/author of two of our favorite works: Surrealist Subversions, the massive compendium of writings by the American Surrealist Movement and Seizing the Airwaves, the free radio handbook that got a lot of us excited about democratizing the airwaves (or stealing them). His latest, Swift Winds, is a gorgeous piece of work, exquisitely printed by our friends at Eberhardt Press, and filled with unexpected gems and manifestos like the "Call for Tunnel Visionaries": "Reality is like a tunnel constructed between the realm of the possible and all that is deemed impossible.... Only by breaking down the tunnel walls, can we fully reveal what is ignored, dismissed or hidden from view by the fetters of reality." Don't miss this unique opportunity to discuss surrealism new and old with Sakolsky!
Thursday May 28, 7PM @ 2640 : Bread & Puppet Theater Presents: the Sourdough Philosophy Cabaret!
2640 is thrilled to welcome Bread and Puppet theater back again, to perform the Sourdough Philosophy Cabaret!
The Sourdough Philosophy Cabaret offers a great variety of numbers from B & P's earliest and newest productions, from the 47 year old King Story to the latest financial sensation: a public money execution, as well as the sweet notes of the Radical Vermont Sheep-Note Choir, Theater Blue and the sounds of The Sourdough Philosophy String and Accordion Ensemble. Six puppeteers perform.
$5 donation requested. Hope to see you there!
Friday May 29, 7PM @ 2640 : Baltimore's Indypendent Reader's "The City from Below" Issue Release and Anniversary Party
Baltimore's Indypendent Reader (lovingly known as Indyreader) is celebrating the release of our new issue documenting The City from Below Conference. This is an extended issue and, more excitingly, our first-ever national issue. We are very, very proud of this issue and hope that you will celebrate its release with us.
This party is not solely a release party but also a recognition of Indyreader's three-year anniversary. We have loved being a part of your lives these past three years and greatly desire to kick up our heels with our friends.
There will be refreshments, a cash bar, live music provided by Baltimore's very own beans, and radical games! There is no entry fee but donations are extremely appreciated.
Please come out! We would love to have everyone revel in the release of The City from Below Issue and our three-year anniversary!
Saturday May 30, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Coffee with Iraq Vet & Conscientious Objector
Josh Steiber is a combat veteran who just got out of the army as a conscientious objector after being part of the 'surge' in Iraq. He is beginning a peace walk from Maryland to the West Coast. Along the way he aims to have as many formal and informal conversations on the war, his experience as a soldier, and the responsibilities we have to all those affected by the actions of U.S. occupation. Come join him in an open dialogue this Saturday, May 30th at 7 p.m.
