Events for August 2009
Thursday Aug 6, 8PM @ 2640 : "FRESH" Come watch what you're eating.
Our summer screening series continues with...
FRESH, a film by Sofia Joanes, celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision of our food and our planet’s future. FRESH addresses an ethos that has been sweeping the nation and is a call to action America has been waiting for.
This film has been garnering a great deal of attention nationwide and we're very thrilled to be able to show it to you, the good people of Baltimore!
Our friends over at Participation Park are going to be co-sponsoring this event with us. They're an extremely incredible community garden, art project, and, in general, a wonderful space for the growth of radical ideals and practices. They will speak about their project; where it's been, where they hope it will go, and the goals of the project. They will also facilitate discussion, along with Red Emma's, for those who wish to stick around after the screening.
Come out to discuss community gardening and creating a more delicious, more sustainable future.
Friday Aug 14, 7:30PM @ Red Emma's : Reportback: An Educator's Trip to Cuba
Keith Brooks, long time activist, former Baltimore resident, and current NYC high school teacher, will be speaking and showing video footage of a recent Witness For Peace sponsored educators' trip to Cuba he was on. Brooks will discuss some of the highlights of the trip, which was based in Havana and included a visit to a rural province. Having cut sugar cane for a month on the first Venceremos Brigade in 1969 also gave Brooks some frame of reference for what he saw and experienced 40 years later. While not an expert on Cuba, he will also offer his thoughts on the current status of the Cuban Revolution. Q & A, discussion to follow.

Thursday Aug 20, 8PM @ Red Emma's : "Visions of Utopia: Experiments in Sustainable Culture" with The Red Clover Collective
Red Emma's Summer Screening Series keeps on chugging along.
On August 20th, 2009, at 8pm, at Red Emma's, we're proud to be showing the film, "Visions of Utopia: Experiments in Sustainable Culture".
This film is an incredible two-part documentary about intentional communities and the people who coexist within them. The films chronicle seventeen diverse intentional communities, as well as going in-depth into 2,500 years of shared living's history. The film explores why people would decide to live in a shared-style, what works and what doesn't when making this committment, and why communities come together to stay together.
We're proud to say that Baltimore's own intentional community, The Red Clover Collective, is co-sponsoring this event with us. They will tell their own story and facilitate discussion after the film.
We hope you will join us for incredible evening, as we explore one of the most important questions we can ever ask ourselves: How do we decide to live together?
Friday Aug 21, 7:30PM @ 2640 : Hope Under Occupation
From non-violent direct action, to intricate works of art on the very alls that imprison, learn about the creative tactics being used in Palestine to resist, remember, and keep hope alive.

Sabreena Da Witch (Abeer), a Palestinian Hip-Hop artist, featured in the award-winning documentary Slingshot Hip-Hop, will share her experience as an artist working to bring attention to the occupation.

Saturday Aug 29, 8PM @ 2640 : Sing and Shout! It's Karaoke Night!
If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your revolution; that's no solution.
If I can't sing and shout, you can count me out. And I'll dance my way
to freedom.
Fall is quickly approaching; summer is drawing to a close. But, here at Red Emma’s we’re stripping off our combat boots and getting ready to cut footloose!
That’s right, this Saturday we’re hosting a karaoke/dance party! You should come out and join us for one last summer hoorah! Take a break from your summer projects and your fall preparations. Come pick up a mic, or bid on someone else to pick up a mic. Yes, there’s a twist. You can bid on any of your favorite Red Emma’s Radicals to sing whatever song you’d like. Haven’t you ever wanted to see us twirl our Kropotkin-esque beards while rocking out to Britney Spears? Well, this is probably your one and only chance to see this happen live! All you need to do is place a satisfactory bid on an obliging collective member, and that collective member will make an adorable spectacle out of themselves for all to enjoy!
Then when the Red Emma’s Radicals aren’t singing your picks - we hope that you will enjoy the karaoke stage to its fullest. Our bar will be open and in full swing. Two from our collective will perform a not-to-miss opening number to kick-off the night’s festivities; as well as be our Master and Madam of Ceremonies.
There is no grand plan to this event. We’re placing our manifestos delicately out of dancing range. We simply want to kick back and have as much fun as humanely possible. This is your invitation to join us.
Come take the mic! Come put on your dancing shoes! Enjoy a summer night with us!
Just come cut footloose…
