A Workshop on the Lyric Essay: Daring to Deviate from the Uninspired Memoir

A Workshop on the Lyric Essay: Daring to Deviate from the Uninspired Memoir

Sunday, August 10th 2025

Free School Classroom
Have you ever wanted to write about pivotal events in your life, but felt restricted and uninspired by the chronological format of most memoir writing? (Who wouldn’t stifle a yawn if they had to read another memoir that begins with “I was born in…I grew up in…”). It’s 2025, and it’s time to shake things up.

In this class we’ll use Randon Billings Noble’s collection of lyric essays A HARP IN THE STARTS in order to discover varied creative ways to pen our own realities. Students will have the opportunity to begin several enticing essays that they can turn into published works if they choose to do so. If anyone wants to build one of their pieces into a first draft after the class is finished, I will offer to read a finished first draft and provide feedback on the piece.

This class is open to writers of any level. Come bring your pen, your thoughts, a notebook, and get ready to write!
