In 1970, a series of bombings and arson attacks on police and government targets, organized by the radical leftist group Weather Underground, shook Americans’ sense of security. For years, photos of Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, and other members of the Weather Underground were emblazoned on FBI wanted posters. In his new book, Bad Moon Rising, Arthur Eckstein details Weather’s campaign of ideologically driven, nationally coordinated political violence and how the FBI attempted to monitor, block, and capture its members. Drawing on extensive research into FBI documents as well as new interviews with key players, Eckstein excavates truth from the layers of mythology surrounding both the Weather Underground and the FBI’s failed effort to shut it down. We're excited to welcome Art, who is based in Greenbelt, MD, to Red Emma's this November!
Contributing significant new information about a traumatic time in American history, Bad Moon Rising is essential reading for anyone who wants a more accurate picture of the turbulence of the 1960s. With careful analysis of the forces that acted as a brake on Weather violence as well as the forces that led to the FBI’s failure against the Weather Underground, this book holds insights for understanding the dynamics of present and future political radical movements.
