When it comes to Baltimore, art and protest never seem to be far apart. Indeed, many protests have featured contingents of artists, and art performances and shows often explicitly take on Baltimore politics. Events over the past year since the Uprising, from protests over Confederate memorials to calling out the continued segregation of the arts scene, points to the centrality of the arts community to Baltimore's politics and struggles over social justice. Why is art often called upon to "heal" Baltimore, such as through massive projects like Light City? What and who's art is the focus of such healing and what art refuses to heal? What about art that is angry, intense, calls out problems and demands different kinds of solutions? What kind of politics does this art imagine and what publics form around it? This event brings together local Baltimore artists for a conversation on these issues, featuring Sheila Gaskins, Kimberly Sheridan, Pablo Machioli, and Fire Angelou to talk about how their politics influences their artistic production, as well as how their art intervenes in political struggles.Co-sponsored by the Political Science Department of Johns Hopkins University, the journal Political Theory, and the Program for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Please join us and these amazing artists to discuss the future of revolutionary art and struggle in Baltimore.
