Come join us at Red Emma’s on November 6th from 6-8 for a benefit happy hour! Modeled after the Freedom Rides of the late 1960’s The Baltimore Civil Rights Trip is an historic field trip for baltimore city highschoolers. Over 6 days, with 7 adults and 36 students in 1 bus traveking to 11 different cities the trip takes students on an immersive journey through the history of the American Civil Rights Movement. The students not only visit some of the best museums and important  historic sites in the country but they  also meet with living activists who participated in the Movement. Students have had the opportunity to meet: John Lewis (rest in power), Andrew Young, Bernarde Lafayette (rest in power), Dr. Sybil Hampton, and many more. The students get to touch ground at locations significant to the Movement, such as the abandoned Bryant grocery store where Emmett Till was falsely accused of whistling at Carolyn Bryant as well as the very same courtroom where his murderers were acquitted. Organizing this trip is a monumental lift each year. Meeting fundraising goals has been harder and harder each year as the cost per student has essentially doubled in the last decade. It costs about $1500 per student, which covers all elements of the trip (lodging, food, museum entry, and speaker honorariums). All 3 schools  fundraise collectively into 1 big pot and no student has ever been turned away for lack of funds.  Through various forms of fundraising throughout the year - raking leaves for donations on the weekend, hosting fundraiser events, selling pizza to the masses - they’ve made a big dent already, but have about $20,000 left to go. So come, Grab a drink and hear some youth performers in support of this important educational opportunity for Baltimore youth! A portion of every drink you but will go directly towards to paying the way for these students to ride through history!
