Author Erica Kudisch discusses her debut release, The Backup, and the difficulties of promoting a story that defies categorization in an industry that relies on labels and brand recognition. In the current market, LGBT stories, and those by women in particular, come already packaged with an expectation of romance. But is there room for other stories--affirming and uplifting without being romantic, or dysfunctional without being necessarily tragic--about the queer community? And if we can carve this space out of the existing literary order, what would it look like?
