Learn about grassroots organizing in Mexico after the watershed 2018 victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) that ended 70 years of rule by the PRI, and how we build solidarity between social movements across the border.

José Luis Granados is an experienced Mexican-Canadian freelance journalist based in Mexico City. He has worked throughout Latin America as both a writer and election observation specialist, including a stint as a member of the Canadian electoral mission in the 2009 Presidential Election in El Salvador and as an ethno-cultural outreach officer for Elections Canada for the 2011 federal election. More recently he observed the 2018 Presidential Election in Mexico where he was responsible for the English-language communication strategy for the The Scholar and Citizen Network for Democracy, an independent observation mission led by Dr. John Ackerman. José Luis has worked on developing international solidarity with countries of the global South since his first visit to Venezuela in 2005 and he has since travelled to the country on several occasions to further develop ties with the peoples of Venezuela through the Norman Bethune Front. José Luis is fluent in both English and Spanish.

The México Solidarity Project, organized in 2019, recognizes the 2018 presidential election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as a watershed moment. AMLO and his progressive Morena party offer the first opportunity to end the corruption, impoverishment, and subservience to US interests that has marked the 70 years of PRI party dominance. At the México Solidarity Project, we offer critical support for Morena. That means listening to voices in the social movements in México struggling for basic rights and improvements in the lives of workers and people in all marginalized groups. These voices for radical change sometimes line up with Morena and sometimes, as with the Zapatistas, do not. We bring together activists from various socialist and left organizations as well as individuals committed to worker and global justice. Our most basic goals: to promote people-to-people understanding across borders and to concentrate efforts to oppose the US dominance that undermines México’s national sovereignty.
