It’s FREE! (Please support the Coffeehouse and the feature, if you are able!)
You need some summer Vibe in your life, don’t you? Well, here it comes! Join us for a poetry/spoken word open mic of justice, conscious thought, spirituality, fam, real life—whatever advances the village! In the tradition of Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth magazine, come drop some progressive “fiyah” on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy! By the way: it’s a non-erotic poetry/”loves jones” type of venue. (And, almost needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other unnecessary ish outside!)
We are all kinds of amped to bring you our feature for August: the Baltimore Citywide Youth Poetry Team! This group of young people, from high schools and colleges across the Baltimore metro area, is ultra-talented and has a depth and thoroughness of poetry that belies the members’ years. The team, founded by OluButterfly Woods and coached by Slangston Hughes and a top team of assistant coaches (some of whom came through the program themselves), is a program of DewMore Baltimore, an organization empowering young people to use the Arts in the transformation of society. This is an opportunity not only to support these young people, but to be enriched by them! And be not fooled into thinking, “Awww—ain’t that precious; the kids are going to do some cute little poems.” Don’t get it twisted! These young people are about to spit some mature, challenging “fiyah” to you that’s going to get into your soul!

MIC LIST OPENS AT 7:00pm!

The evening is brought to you by Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, a worker-owned and collectively-operated restaurant, coffee roaster, bookstore, and community events space located in Baltimore's Station North neighborhood that is dedicated to putting principles of solidarity and sustainability into practice in a democratic workplace! Here you’ll find delicious transparently traded, organic coffee, espresso and tea, as well as a selection of vegan and vegetarian food. Get here early so you can check out the books and periodicals on a wide range of topics, with a focus on radical politics and culture. Plus, there’s free internet access! http://redemmas.org/ https://www.facebook.com/redemmas
