In this two part workshop, participants will use art as a tool for therapeutic expression and also learn coping skills in the process. The workshop will be discussion and art-making based. There is absolutely no “skill” required to take part in this. The art making will consist of creating expressive drawings/paintings and creating positivity pillows. Participants will learn how to utilize different methods of healthy coping, such as healthy distraction, self soothing, and moment-improving techniques.I. Coping skills presentation and discussionII. Expressive art making- Participants will receive paper and have the choice of materials including watercolor, oil pastel, soft pastel, charcoal, acrylic paint, etc. and are guided in creating art for the expression of emotion rather than creating art to be “good” and controlled.III. Positivity pillow making- Participants will receive a piece of muslin fabric and will draw on it with markers and write a word that brings them positivity (e.g. hope, balance, peace, etc..), sew it and then stuff it with cotton and soothing herbs.
