Uncovering radical histories for young audiences! Award-winning author Deb Heiligman presents her latest biography for young audiences, telling the story of early American agitator, Emma Goldman. She’s joined in conversation by prolific Baltimore writer Kristina Gaddy, whose new book, A Most Perilous World tells the story of four young abolitionists in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Deborah Heiligman has written many books for children and young adults, including Torpedoed: The True Story of the World War II Sinking of “The Children’s Ship”, a YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award finalist and Golden Kite winner; Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers, a Michael L. Printz Honor winner, YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award winner, Boston Globe–Horn Book Award winner, and Golden Kite winner; and Charles and Emma: The Darwins’ Leap of Faith, a National Book Award finalist, Michael L. Printz Honor winner, and YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award winner. She lives with her husband and dog in New York City.

Kristina R. Gaddy is the author of A Most Perilous World: The True Story of the Young Abolitionists and their Crusade Against Slavery (Dutton 2025), Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History (W.W. Norton 2022) _and​ _Flowers in the Gutter: The True Story of the Edelweiss Pirates, Teenagers Who Resisted the Nazis (Dutton 2020). She is the co-author, with Rhiannon Giddens of Go Back and Fetch It: Recovering Early Black Music in the Americas for Fiddle and Banjo​, and a Baltimore-based writer and fiddler. She has received the Parsons Award from the Library of Congress, Logan Nonfiction Fellowship and a Robert W. Deutsch Foundation Rubys artist award.
