Red Emma's
WHAT: A poetry/spoken word open mic hosted by Analysis and featuring Gayle Danley!   WHEN: Sunday, February 8, 2015, 7:00pm—9:45pm (mic list opens at 6:30pm)   WHERE: Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, 30 W. North Ave., Baltimore, MD 21201 WHY: Because you love justice, and you love the arts! It’s FREE!  (Please support the coffeehouse and the feature!)   SPECIAL SUNDAY EDITION!   It’s cold out!  You need to heat up with some smokin’-hot poetry!  Join us for a poetry/spoken word open mic of justice, conscious thought, spirituality, family, real life—whatever advances the village!  In the tradition of Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth magazine, come drop some progressive “fiyah” on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy!  By the way: it’s a non-erotic poetry, non-“loves jones” type of venue, so we ask that you not go there.  (And, almost needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other unnecessary ish outside!)   You’re not even ready for this: our feature for the evening will be International Slam Champion, Gayle Danley!  Born in New York City and raised in Atlanta, Gayle Danley won her first public speaking contest in 7th grade and studied broadcast journalism at Howard University’s School of Communications, where she graduated cum laude.  It was not, however, until after finishing her Master’s at Syracuse University that she learned about slam poetry.  She embraced it almost immediately and won the 1994 National Individual Slam Poet competition in Ashville, NC; in Heidelberg, Germany, she became the 1996 International Slam Poet Champion!

Feeling blessed to be able to share her talent and motivational words with audiences across the country, Gayle has produced a one-woman show, Brilliance, and touched thousands with her slam poetry workshops, lectures, performances and speeches, and motivational speaking—including helping elementary and secondary students with traumatic experiences.  A feature story on slam poetry was presented on the CBS’s 60 Minutes in 1999, which spotlighted her classroom work and riveting performance.  She has published three books: Naked, Soulful—A Slam Poetry Study Guide, and Passionate—Poems You Can Feel.

Gayle’s keynote and lecture series fuse her poetry with the ability to touch her audience through real life experiences, leaving a lasting emotional message.  Her explosive style combines movement and emotion as she performs her magic on the audience, sweeping them up in her words as she addresses and explores contemporary issues!
