Red Emma's
WHAT: A poetry/spoken word open mic hosted by Analysis and featuring Jamaal St. John! WHEN: Saturday, August 6, 2016, 6:30pm—9:00pm (mic list opens at 6:00pm) WHERE: Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, 30 W. North Ave., Baltimore, MD 21201 WHY: Because you love justice, and you love the arts!  https://www.facebook.com/events/291473624520128/   It’s FREE!  (Please support the coffeehouse and the feature!)  We’ve passed through the summer solstice, and are moving toward the autumnal equinox.  So let’s reach the heights of poetry so we can get balance in our lives!  Join us for an open mic of justice, conscious thought, spirituality, fam, real life—whatever advances the village!  In the tradition of Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth magazine, come drop some progressive “fiyah” on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy!  By the way: it’s a non-erotic poetry, non-“love jones” type of venue, so we ask that you not go there.  (And, almost needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other unnecessary ish outside!)  Bringing us the summer heat is Jamaal St. John!  Jamaal is a performance poet and relationship form facilitator from the New York City area with over 20 years of experience.  He is a two-time Nyourican Grand Slam Champion and a four-time member of The Nuyorican Poet Café’s national slam team.  He is a six-time winner of the Toronto International Poetry Slam, a two-time winner of the Yale Peabody Slam, and a two-time winner of the James Marshall Slam at Quinnipiac University.  He has performed at various colleges, universities, and poetry venues across the United States and Canada.  He has three spoken word albums to his credit: Enterlightenment, Won’t Catch Me Runnin’, and The Southpaw Stance. He’s currently working on a book of quotations about love, dating, and relationships called Words to Love By, a one man stage show called I Spoke Up Like This, and a new spoken word album called The Coffeehouse Effect.  He just released his first book of poetry, A Choice of Weapons, in November 2015, which is available for purchase on Amazon.com.  When he isn’t performing, Jamaal is hosting/facilitating relationship forums, which he has been doing since Feb. 2012.  Holdin’ it down for the evening is Analysis—poet/spoken word artist, educator, minister, organizer, activist, consultant, bookseller… Y’all know what’s up!    www.facebook.com/analysisthepoet  Twitter @AnalysisThePoet  MIC LIST OPENS AT 6:00pm!    (Mature language and themes may be involved; not suggested for younger children.)    The evening is brought to you by Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, a worker-owned and collectively-operated restaurant, coffee roaster, bookstore, and community events space located in Baltimore's Station North neighborhood that is dedicated to putting principles of solidarity and sustainability into practice in a democratic workplace!  Here you’ll find delicious, transparently traded, organic coffee, espresso and tea, as well as a selection of vegan and vegetarian food.  Get here early so you can check out the books and periodicals on a wide range of topics, with a focus on radical politics and culture.  Plus, there’s free internet access!    http://redemmas.org/   https://www.facebook.com/redemmas    Remember: PEACE, JUSTICE, POETRY!!   Will we see you there?  : )
