Different year, different administration; same oppression—more
police killing of black folk, more jailing of immigrants, more violence against
Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders… We
need more poetry to help us heal, process and galvanize into action! Join us for an online open mic of the theme, “Peace,
Justice, Poetry!” It’s a night of
justice, conscious socioploitical thought, family, survival and empowerment,
spirit—whatever advances the village! In
the tradition of Emma Goldman’s “Mother Earth” magazine, come drop some rad
“fiyah” on us, or contribute just with your presence and energy. By the way: it’s a non-erotic venue, so
rather than a love & erotica evening, we focus the night on justice and
other matters of life. And, almost
needless to say, leave the misogyny, homophobia and other unnecessary ish
outside!
Putting the poetic power into the evening’s feature set
will Marjan Naderi! The 2020 D.C. Youth
Poet Laureate, Naderi is an Afghan-American writer and educator based in
Washington, D.C. As a 6-time Poetry
Grand Slam Champion, she has been featured by The United Nation’s Girl Up
Campaign, the Kennedy Center, D.C. United, The U.S. Institute of Peace, NowThis
News and various other major news outlets.
Her writing has been recognized by The Adroit Journal, Brave New
Voices, Split This Rock, and the National Young Arts Foundation, where she was
nominated for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award. As an educator, Naderi has facilitated
writing workshops across the nation. She's taught Quranic Studies at The Afghan
Academy and founded the Washington International Academy Library. She's currently working with international
non-profits to build schools and libraries in Afghanistan. Her work is featured in curricula including
Fairfax County Public Schools and L.M.S. Voice.
